Recent engine trials have shown a single 2hp electric outboard can
propel MotorCat along at 5mph. At the other extreme with 2x75hp petrol
outboards MotorCat can achieve around 28 knots.
A test reporter quoted “In performance terms it is difficult
to appreciate just how quick displacement hulls can be. They simply
slice through the water with no bow lift, no banging or slamming,
and give a ride that even grandma would approve of.”
Motorcat is also environmentally friendly because
of the lack of wash, damage to riverbanks and reduced emissions”
.
One delighted River Thames owner said his journey times had been reduced
by half ,since there was less need to slow down due to reduced wash.
The modern outboard is a lightweight, high performance machine with
excellent power to weight characteristics. They are quiet, reliable
and extremely sophisticated bearing no resemblance to engines of a
decade ago.
The main advantages are no oily bilges, no leaking seacocks, a significant
reduction in noise level, a reduction in service charges, emissions
and corrosion. The Evinrude ETEC requires no dealer maintenance
for 3 years and the Honda has a 5 year warranty.
A MotorCat owner should match the engines to his intended use. As
a guide we recommend 2x3hp electric engines for fresh water lakes,
2x10hp for rivers, 2x25hp for estuary and 2x75hp for offshore use.
Other
types of propulsion. The possibility exists of fitting highly economical
low maintenance diesel outboards, outboard jet – drives, and
even diesel inboard
